Wisdom Teeth Removal
1. What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth or third molars are the last permanent teeth to erupt. Most people have 4 wisdom teeth, two in the lower jaw and two in the upper jaw. These teeth usually erupt between the ages of 16-21 and may start to cause problems thereafter.
2. Problems caused by impacted wisdom teeth
Impacted wisdom teeth are frequently food traps and breeding grounds for bacteria. Tooth decay can occur, not only affecting the wisdom tooth but neighbouring teeth as well. Infection of the overlying gums can cause pain and swelling, a condition known as ‘pericoronitis’. Cysts and tumours rarely arise from buried wisdom teeth, but if this occur, they can lead to extensive destruction of adjacent jawbone and teeth. Treatment can be complex and early
detection offers the best cure. As problems associated with wisdom teeth often develop
silently, it is advisable to have a consultation to determine if treatment is required.
3. The first visit: Check-up and consultation
The initial visit will consist of a thorough examination of the oral cavity. X-rays will also be taken. The position of the wisdom teeth, their status and their relationship to adjacent
structures will be assessed. Many wisdom teeth require removal due to pain, decay or
as a preventive measure against future problems. Some however, may be left alone if they are not likely to give problems. The benefits and risks of removal or retention
will be thoroughly discussed and explained to you.
4. Wisdom Tooth Surgery
Wisdom tooth removal is a relatively minor surgical procedure. With better techniques, drugs and anxiety management protocols, surgery can be performed with minimal discomfort. The procedure can be done under local anaesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia.
